Balau
The Wood:
The texture is fine and even. The grain is interlocked, often very deeply so. A prominent stripe figure often occurs on radial surfaces due to the interlocked grain, density of 900kg/m3.

The Tree:
The tree is reported to be very tall, reaching heights of 200 feet (60m), with straight cylindrical stems, and trunk diameters of up to 72 inches (180cm). medium to large heartwood often buttressed, with a straight cylindrical bore between 30-50m long. Widely distributed throughout forests in Asia, predominantly in hilly areas.
Colour:
The colour of the freshly cut heartwood is yellowish-brown.
Typical uses:
Decking and heavy-duty construction.
